Thank you for exploring how “The Strategic Planning Guide for Event Professionals” can be a valuable teaching resource. I know first-hand that the content resonates; I taught college for ten years and much my curriculum formed the book. It sounds like a line when I tell you that I received the below letter during the holiday season, but it’s true.

Happy Holidays! Hope this email finds you well. I was just thinking about you.
I wanted to let you know I recently accepted an Event Manager position at the Marriott. I wanted to reach out to let you know. All of my hard work and efforts have paid off and it’s because of you that I was able to push through. You don’t realize how much your influence has helped guide me and push me. It will be an adjustment and a lot to learn but I’m ready and so excited.
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
Gina

No one gets into teaching to get rich. However, the lives we touch and affirmation from notes like the one above is priceless. My imagination is you have your own stories of special students whose lives you changed and who will always remember taking your class.

That bond comes, in part, from what we teach along with a desire to help students expand their minds and learn to think. That’s my book’s superpower. I created my strategic planning principles after spending time in Corporate America, watching what didn’t work and finding ways through ubiquitous politics and bureaucracy. Turning the lessons I learned into stories that are woven through the book makes the content relatable and memorable while simultaneously challenging readers to think differently.

The more “real life” knowledge you can impart, the greater the odds of your students’ professional success. Sharing experience based on 30 years in the event marketing industry fills each chapter with a plethora of useful knowledge. Here’s a synopsis:

The Strategic Planning Guide for Event Professionals

by Christy Lamagna, CMP, CMM, CTSM

Overview:
People entering the event profession often do so imagining it is a glamorous job filled with parties and extravagance. This misconception hurts not just those entering the field but those currently working countless hours to produce quality meetings.

By painting a vivid and accurate picture of what the industry is actually like and illustrating challenges most planners face, readers are immersed in the day to day life and struggles of an event planner. From there, the concept of event strategists is introduced along with an exploration of how a shift from logistic based thinking to one rooted in strategy in thinking will shape the future of this multi-billion-dollar industry.

Given Me A Direction As I Begin Teaching

About 8 months ago I discovered you, thank you! The knowledge and passion that you share through your book and articles has been awesome. They have given me a direction as I begin teaching my first Event Management class at Oklahoma State along with advising students on the Signature events that they create and orchestrate.

My position is new in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University so when I shared my thoughts about the role I would play to the Dean, we both agreed that this new position’s title should have “Event Strategist” included. The position and title have brought a lot of interest from both students, faculty and staff on the Oklahoma State Campus. To be honest, I never thought that a title could bring so much additional enthusiasm and passion to my career along with higher expectations but it has a...WOW!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and having a passion for our industry. I look forward to what you will bring in 2020.

Taught us the difference between working hard and working smart

Christy encouraged her students to set goals and establish a strategy to achieve those goals. She taught us the difference between working hard and working smart but to also be strategic about it. Her lessons have guided me to where I am with my career and she will always be my mentor for that.
